White Day in Japan
Ah, White Day, such a romantic counterpoint to Valentine’s Day. What’s that? Never heard of it? Well we don’t blame you since it’s a Japanese holiday.

You’ve probably already read in our last Dailybento post how Valentine’s Day is very particular in Japan, particularly in that this is the day in which a girl gives chocolate to a boy that she likes, but like Valentine’s Day here in the states most girls just give it to any guy they know because it’s more or less a social obligation. White Day, on the other hand, is the same day held on March 14 except reversed, meaning that a boy must “pay back” a girl for their kindness in giving him chocolates. Why “white” day you ask? Originally it was because the “giri” wasn’t chocolate, but marshmallows.

These days, the “giri” from the boys can be anything from white chocolate, white cookies, jewelry, or even white lingerie! Guys, maybe these could be some good ideas for your girlfriend on Valentine’s Day since most people outside of Asia don’t have a White Day.
