Beat of Angel Headlines!

BoA, who is a well-known Korean singer, was in the SF Bay Area Sunday, June 28 headlining on the Main Stage at the SF Pride festival with the likes of Solange Knowles. Her self-titled American album hasn’t become the mega crossover album that a lot of Asian pop fans have hoped for; it had a peak position of #127 on the Billboard 200, selling only 8,000 copies of her album nationwide. The GLBT has given her much needed exposure whether it’s on radio stations or at dance clubs so it’s no wonder why she performed here yesterday.
BoA’s debut American single “Eat You Up” was released online on October 21, 2008; it reached the top positions on the online music charts in the United States.
She was born and raised in Gyeonggi-Do, South Korea and is an active entertainer in both South Korea and Japan. She was discovered by SM Entertainment when she accompanied her older brother to a talent search. As her style indicates, she is hugely influenced by hip hop.
“People have asked me if it (my name) is an acronym for ‘best of Asia,’” the diminutive singer says with a laugh. “Even for ‘Bank of America.’ No, it’s just a creative styling of my real name, which, loosely translated, means ’sparkling jewel.’” (Reuters)
